Biodiversity has returned to the hill—now a ‘green lung’—following ecological restoration; a stark contrast to its past as an industrial mining site.
This is the story of a hill whose vast expanse was once riddled with holes by mining machinery—a place devoid of water, greenery, or signs of life. Nature lovers faced opposition from vested interests and those driven by personal gain, yet they stood their ground, fighting battles ranging from on-the-ground efforts to legal challenges. When plans were made to develop the hill for tourism, the matter reached the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Following a legal battle, the hill’s ecological restoration began—a journey that has now become an environmental success story. This is the story of Shankargarh Hill, located near the Dewas Bypass. Once a barren landscape just a decade ago, the hill is now home to over 300,000 trees. Lakes teeming with biodiversity have emerged, and wildlife such as tigers, hyenas, and jungle cats have been sighted.
Scientific Studies Document the Transformation
Shankargarh’s transformation is now gaining recognition in the scientific community. A study titled ‘Post-Mining Ecological Restoration in Shankargarh Hills’ was published in a recent issue of the scientific journal *The Indian Forester*. The publication *Down To Earth* also highlighted this transformation.
It Began in 2016
Samarjit Hotel, a member of the ‘Green Army’—the organization driving this change—recalls that the initiative began in 2016 after witnessing the devastation caused by mining. Other organizations joined the cause, and in 2018, the Forest Department began a plantation drive. Conservator Chandramouli Shukla spearheaded an initiative to plant 100,000 saplings, following the cessation of mining operations by the Mining Corporation Limited.
Satellite Imagery Confirms the Change
Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Pradeep Mishra states that Shankargarh now stands as a unique example of nature conservation and ecological restoration. This is also documented in scientific studies. Between 2017 and 2025, there has been a significant increase in greenery. Satellite-based analysis of vegetation assets shows density levels rising from 0.19 to 0.30, with peak areas reaching 0.68.
The rejuvenation of Shankargarh is the result of a collective effort. It is an initiative to preserve this natural area for the future of Dewas and to ensure the conservation of biodiversity. It will be developed for the benefit of future generations. — Dr. Rituraj Singh
